Navigating the B1 Route: How to Build Your Career in the Netherlands Through Integration

B1 Route for family migrants

Starting with the Dutch Civic Integration Act 2021

In 2021, the Dutch government introduced the Civic Integration Act (Wet Inburgering 2021) to improve the integration process for newcomers in the Netherlands. One of the key shifts under this new law is a more tailored approach to civic integration, where municipalities guide newcomers based on their background, goals, and capacity. Among the pathways introduced, the B1-route stands out as a work-oriented track designed to help individuals integrate through employment.

If you’re looking to build a career in the Netherlands, this route was made for you.

What is the B1-route and Who is It For?

The B1-route is intended for newcomers who are capable of reaching B1-level Dutch and aim to enter the job market—whether through paid employment, volunteering, or further vocational education. It’s a structured and future-focused approach to learning the language and understanding Dutch society, while preparing for long-term economic participation.

Why Dutch Language Skills Matter in the Job Market

Language isn’t just about communication; it’s about opportunity. In the Netherlands, most employers expect a good command of Dutch, especially in customer-facing roles, healthcare, logistics, and administration. Reaching B1 level means you can:

  • Hold professional conversations
  • Write work emails and reports
  • Engage confidently in interviews and team discussions
  • Understand laws, contracts, and basic tax forms

B1 is the minimum threshold where the job market really opens up.

What Does the B1 Route Involve?

Here’s what the B1-route covers under the Civic Integration requirements:

  • Language training from A0 to B1 proficiency
  • Staatsexamen Nt2 Program I: the official Dutch language exam at B1 level
  • KNM (Knowledge of Dutch Society) module
  • MAP (Module Arbeidsmarkt en Participatie): preparing you for Dutch work culture

This structured program must be completed within three years.
